What does custom-coded actually mean, next to Webflow or Framer?
Those give you a visual editor sitting on the vendor's infrastructure. Custom code means the site is written in a framework you can host anywhere, with no editor layer in between and no ceiling on what it can be asked to do.
What is Claude Code, and does an AI write my website?
It is an AI coding tool, and it writes a great deal of the code — under review. Nothing reaches your site because a model produced it; the same person who would have written it by hand reads it, changes it and decides whether it ships.
When is custom code the wrong choice?
When a platform would do. A straightforward brochure site launches faster and cheaper on one, and we would rather say that than sell engineering time somebody does not need yet. Custom code earns its keep once you have hit a limit, not before.
Can you move my site off a platform without losing rankings?
Yes, provided every existing URL is mapped to its replacement before anything switches over. That mapping is the whole job — the rebuild is the visible part, and the redirects are the part that decides whether your traffic survives.
If we part ways, what am I actually left holding?
The code, the domain and the hosting account — a working site somebody else can pick up. No editor licence to keep paying for and no proprietary format to escape from, which is most of the point of building this way.
